Here is a list of bars that someone posted to ba.general (a unix newsgroup)
a few months ago (no, I haven't tried most of these places. Reviews are
welcome!)

The following is a list of bars to be enjoyed in the Menlo Park and Palo Alto
area as compiled by my roommate (Michael Eldredge at Stanford) and sent to me.
I thought other might appreciate it. Enjoy!
==========================================================================
My personal favorites are: The Goose, Zotz on sunny afternoons, the
Hitch Rack/Peanut Farm/Pioneer Loop, The Lanc, and Jan's. Well I actually
spend a good bit of time at them all.
Check out the following list (which is not in any particular order).
Dredge
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The O - The Oasis, El Camino, M.P. Old Stanford hangout
peanut shells on the floor. Beer & Burgers. Now is
mostly the Middle age yuppie crowd mixed with some
eclectic locals. Surly help.
The Goose - The Dutch Goose, Alameda de la Pulgas (Ave. of the Fleas)
M.P. New Stanford hang out. Peanut shells on the floor,
Beer & Burgers. Now mostly young Stanford yuppies mixed
with a very eclectic group of (friendly-Stanford hating)
locals.
Zotz - The Alpine Beer Garden (formerly Rozattie's). Alpine Road
Ladera/Portola Valley. Out door beer garden. Sun, beer,
burgers, greasy fries, picnic tables, peanut shells in the
dirt. Young yuppies, old yuppies, bikers, nerds, hips,
dips, kids, cats, dogs, bicycles, babies, (you get the
picture).
The Pioneer - Woodside Road, Woodside (Logical West of 280). Live bands
bottled beer, mixed drinks, Dancing (on a very small dance
floor). Cover (~ $3.00). Fun Place.
The Peanut Farm - Canada Road, Woodside (Past the Pioneer, turn right). Pool
tables. Hick. Bottles of Bud. In the old days, they
used to give you as many peanuts as you could carry while
you were drinking. Good stop between the Pioneer and the
Hitch Rack (see below).
The Hitch Rack - Canada Road, Woodside (Past the Peanut Farm, under 280).
Bikers and Hicks. Bottles of Bud, mixed drinks. Front
porch with some chairs. Live band at the end of the week.
(Usually very good music!).
Jan's - Jan's Valley Inn. Portola Road, Portola Valley. Small.
half bar/half (great little) restaurant. Bar is (again)
small. Great Kamikazes! Wood grain carpeting! Hick.
Usually packed in the evenings. Try the restaurant.
The BBC - The British Bankers Club. El Camino, M.P. Nice, lots
of wood and mirrors. Old bank. Yuppies. Nice dress.
Generally packed. Bouncers. Meet (sic) market. Fun.
Beer, mixed drinks.
Applewood Inn - El Camino, M.P. An Austrian Pizza Place with exotic (and
very good) Pizza and other dishes. Good selection of German
beers. Family run. (Not really a bar, but a very nice place
and they do have all those German Beers....)
The Lanc - The Lancashire Tavern. In the parking lot off University
and Emerson in PA. Pseudo-British Pub. Guinness on tap,
Burgers, Fish and Chips, Dart Boards(2), Smokey, not usually
busy (read: packed) until after 9:00 later in the week. Often
quite an eclectic crowd (many Brits and would-be-Brits).
The Emerson St. - Emerson street, PA. Never crowded. Good meeting place.
Sometimes, standup comedy on Wednesday nights. Mixed
drinks. Sometimes movies on the VCR. Popcorn.
Old Pros - El Camino, PA (near Page Mill). Pool Tables. Beer.
Small. Often filled with Stanford football players.
Pretty friendly.
The Nut House - Antonio's Nut House. California, PA. Pool Tables, Hamms
on tap, a huge Hamms Beer Bear rotating display, peanuts
weird scribblings on the ceiling tiles. Good place to
pass the time waiting for the main act at the Keystone.
Watch out for (or at least watch) the strange denizens
of California Street.
Talbot's - Cheers like tavern with food. A somewhat regular crowd.
Salads and sandwiches. Mixed drinks, some tap beers.
Good meeting place.
The Glow Worm - Off 101, just north of Willow, M.P. Very interesting! A
little scary from the outside. Inside, a little strange.
Cozy, fireplace, country western and easy listening on
the juke box. Most patrons older. Truck stop-ish.
Barney Steels - Veteran's Blvd. Redwood City. Live Bands later in the week.
Hick. Big. Beer and Mixed Drinks. Sometimes big screen
videos.
Chiles - El Camino, M.P. TexMex restaurant w/ a bar. Fun, inexpensive,
quick dinner. Packed with after work crowd.
Pedros - Stanford Shopping Centre. Always packed, meet market.
----- A little further away -------
P.O.W. - The Prince of Wales Pub. 24th Street near the Fairgrounds
in San Mateo. British pub. Guinness (and several others) on
tap. Darts. Out door patio. Friendly. Tuesday night
has the Silicon Gultch Jazz Band - a New Orleans jazz band.
Beers of the world club.
The Bit - The Bit o' England. Burlingame Av., Burlingame. Fun, Cheers
like bar. Mixed drinks, Stroh's on tap. hors d'oeuvres every
day from 4:00 to 6:00p. We're talking little sandwiches,
veggies, calamari, chicken wings, sausages, fried zucs,...
Fireplace and a couple of couches. After a couple dozen
times there I still feel like I'm the only non-regular
there.
Canyon Inn - San Carlos. Hard to find. Monday night football on big
screen. Big, interesting burgers and beer on tap. Several
dart boards. Sometimes, some of the 49ers are found
having dinner up there.
Pudley's - El Camino. San Carlos. Burgers beers. Tall (48oz-ish)
beers. Closes early (10-ish).
